RAIPUR: A Bastar woman lost her leg and suffered severe injuries when a pressure IED planted by Maoists went off in Bijapur district of Bastar division on Saturday.
She had gone to the forest early in the morning to collect mahua fruits and was returning from a nearby waterbody after washing utensils when she inadvertently stepped upon an IED and it blasted.
The incident occurred around 6.30 am near Bodga village in Bhairamgarh region.
Police said that the woman identified as Saraswati Oyam, 35, sustained serious injuries and has lost her leg and serious injuries on another leg and body parts. She was rushed to the Bhairamgarh community health centre, and further referred to Jagdalpur for treatment.
In May last year, two minor boys aged were killed in a similar incident in the same village, police said. Bijapur and Narayanpur districts have been witnessing frequent IED blasts and it’s believed that Maoists have mined the regions with bombs.
These IEDs never discriminate and blow up any individual, minors, women, animals and security personnel as and when stepped upon, often causing fatal injuries.
