In good news for Delhiites, the city will soon get elevated connectivity between INA and Nelson Mandela Marg in Vasant Kunj. The project, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion on the Ring Road, has been met with widespread approval, especially in South Delhi.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will oversee the construction of the elevated corridor, with funding provided by both the Delhi government and the Ministry of Urban Affairs. In addition to the corridor, NHAI will also construct a tunnel between Nelson Mandela Marg and the Shiv Murti Interchange, ensuring seamless connectivity to Indira Gandhi Airport for traffic coming from East and South Delhi.
Project Details And Cost Implications
The proposed elevated corridor, spanning 14 km, will navigate through government residential and commercial complexes along the Ring Road. Initially approved by the central government in July 2021, the project, with the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) at the helm, had stalled due to a lack of approval from the Public Investment Board.
According to a Times Of India report, recent discussions at a meeting in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), focused on mitigating Delhi’s traffic woes, led to the suggestion by Road Transport and Highways Ministry officials to the NHAI’s involvement in the project.
Following the meeting, Union Road Transport Secretary V Umashankar convened a gathering with officials from NHAI, the Delhi government, and the National Buildings Construction Corporation. The project, earlier estimated at Rs 4,500 crore, will see its final cost determined after the detailed project report (DPR) is finalised.
Addressing Traffic Bottlenecks
This much-needed infrastructure project promises to significantly reduce traffic congestion, especially given that daily traffic estimates at AIIMS crossing and between Bhikaji Cama flyover stand at 1.3 lakh and 3.3 lakh vehicles, respectively.
