Johnny Lever’s daughter Jamie Lever on being trolled on social media: ‘Somebody’s even called me a hijra’ |

Jamie Lever, daughter of veteran comedian Johnny Lever, recently shared her experience with online negativity. While her goal has always been to entertain, especially during the pandemic, she’s often been the target of harsh trolling. From body shaming to personal attacks, she’s learned to navigate the criticism with resilience and perspective.
From Entertainment to Unexpected Attention
In her recent appearance on Chhavi Mittal‘s podcast Candid Confessions with Chhavi, Jamie shared that she began creating online content during the COVID-19 lockdown to stay occupied and spread joy. What started as a simple effort to entertain her followers soon attracted unexpected attention through a wave of online comments.
Love from Fans, But Hate from a Few
Jamie further mentioned that while she received a lot of love and support—especially from her father’s fans—hurtful comments occasionally crept in. Amid the positivity, a few harsh remarks stood out, leaving her questioning the intent behind such negativity.
She further shared that the trolling she experienced often turned deeply personal and offensive. She recalled receiving “really nasty” comments targeting her appearance and body. Trolls frequently indulged in body shaming, with remarks aimed at her nose, skin tone, and even the nature of her content. When she mimicked someone as part of her act, people would harshly compare her to others.
Cruel Comments That Left Her Stunned
She recounted how, in the early days, someone had cruelly asked her, “Why do you laugh like a witch?”—a comment that left her stunned. Expressing her disbelief, Jamie questioned where such anger and hatred stemmed from, especially when all she aimed to do was make people laugh. Highlighting how her work clearly resonated with many through views and engagement, she found it baffling that others could be so cruel. Shockingly, she revealed that someone even went as far as calling her a hijra. While she emphasized that such terms aren’t inherently insulting, she wondered aloud, “Why would you make a comment like that?”
Struggling to Cope with the Hate
When asked how she copes with the negativity, Jamie admitted that, at first, she was quite shocked and couldn’t understand where all the hate was coming from. On someone’s advice, she began trying to ignore the comments. Initially, that seemed like a solution, but as the trolling continued, she decided to take action by blocking the users responsible. She spent time removing every hateful comment from her feed manually. However, she soon realized how overwhelming and time-consuming that was, questioning how long she could keep up with blocking each and every troll.
Choosing Peace Over Attention-Seekers
Jamie went on to say that she’s now chosen to simply ignore the hate. She shared how she took time to reflect and asked herself whether those comments were helping her grow — and concluded they weren’t. They weren’t even critiquing her work or art, just targeting her personally. That’s when she began to understand that the motive behind such remarks was often just to grab attention. In fact, she noticed that whenever she did react, some of the same trolls would either apologize or quietly delete their comments, confirming to her that it was all just for attention-seeking.
