Aaron Rodgers remains the talk of the town as NFL insiders, fans, and even players speculate whether the four-time MVP will land with the Pittsburgh Steelers. With the NFL Draft just around the corner, the Steelers are still in limbo, with no clear indication from Rodgers on what direction he’s headed. And despite growing optimism, it appears Pittsburgh is just as uncertain as everyone else.

Aaron Rodgers keeps Steelers guessing as decision looms before NFL Draft

Dianna Russini of The Athletic recently provided insight into the ongoing saga during her appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd. “I can tell you, I spoke to Pittsburgh this morning,” she shared. “No updates right now. At this point, as we’re a week out from the draft, they still have no idea whether or not Aaron Rodgers is gonna sign with them.”

Rodgers’ indecision is testing the patience of Steelers brass, but publicly, they’ve remained calm. Head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the situation at the NFL Owners Meetings and didn’t sound overly concerned. “Not to my knowledge. I don’t know that we’ve approached it from a deadline perspective. Certainly, as I mentioned, you’d like to have settled circumstances, but deadlines can often bring that to a head,” Tomlin noted.
Meanwhile, team president Art Rooney II hinted that the situation might be trending in their favor, though he acknowledged it’s still a waiting game. “I would say it was a good sign that he [Aaron Rodgers] wanted to do that. And we keep hearing that, he’s, I guess, headed in our direction, and so that seems to be [that] all signs are positive so far,” Rooney remarked.
Adding fuel to the fire, Rodgers visited Pittsburgh in March, touring the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. In early April, he even worked out in Los Angeles with Steelers receiver DK Metcalf, sparking further buzz. While these signs are promising, they stop short of confirming his commitment to the team.
“This has been going on for months,” Russini said. “This has been going on since Aaron Rodgers had conversations with the Minnesota Vikings. They made a decision as an organization to say ‘Nope, we’re closing that door’ but they haven’t shut it. They haven’t completely said it’s off the table.”
Rodgers’ recent campaign with the New York Jets was less than stellar—throwing for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions—culminating in a disappointing season that led to the ousting of head coach Robert Saleh and GM Joe Douglas.
Now, as the draft approaches, Pittsburgh waits. They want him, and it’s clear Rodgers holds all the leverage. “They still want him, but I just think Aaron knows he’s got the leverage in this situation here, and he may just sit this thing out and wait,” Russini said.
Until the 41-year-old quarterback speaks, the Steelers—and the rest of the league—are left holding their breath.
